PREAMBLE

This wing of the Highways Department of Government of Tamil Nadu caters to the Design & Investigation of various projects taken up by the Tamil Nadu Government every year for implementation. This wing caters to the Design needs of other 9 wings of the Highways Department.

This wing is headed by Chief Engineer and ably managed by three Divisional Engineers, nine Assistant Divisional Engineers and thirty nine Assistant Engineers.

 

The range of services include Design of River bridges, Road Over Bridges and Road Under Bridges. With the accumulated expertise this wing also done the role of solution provider for complicated cases of bridge failures / rehabilitation. It has rendered Design services for  different projects like part II with the state fund, and external aided projects like NABARD, HUDCO, World Bank, National Highways, etc.

 

It also provides for the services of scrutiny of alternate designs presented by Private Consultants - scrutiny of design in the Prequalification stages and approval of detailed design at the post tender stages. In addition to the above services, this wing also provides Hitech solution for Bridge failures and technical problems encountered during construction of bridges.

 

In the Investigation, Engineers carryout preliminary survey of the site, conduct sub soil investigation, traffic studies and provide details on suitable alignment / discharge particulars / linear waterway etc.

 

From this cue, the Designs wing takes over to provide the structural design adhering to the latest IS and IRC codes and other relevant standards specified by the Ministry of Surface Transport. All the Design and Investigation works are performed using Computers and related software. It is quite essential to mention that for designing various elements of the bridge structure software are developed in house on a continuous basis in order to accelerate the speed of designing and for performing various permutation and combination to arrive at the optimal solutions, economically and technically.

 

After the design is completed this wing prepares the required cost estimates of the works, for the respective wings to float tenders for execution.
