The Highways Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu has implemented various schemes for the construction of Roads and Bridges. The Planning, Designs and Investigation wing has an important function in making the schemes fruitful by is various functions.
The wing is headed by one Chief Engineer(H), Planning, Designs and Investigation, in the head office at Guindy, Chennai, as approved in G.O.No.293 Highways and Minor Ports (HK3), dated: 12.10.2010, with the following Engineers:
Joint Chief Engineer (H)-1 No., Divisional Engineer (H), Planning and Investigation – 8 Nos, Divisional Engineer(H), Designs – 4 Nos, Assistant Divisional Engineer(H), Planning and Investigation-16 Nos., Assistant Divisional Engineer (H), Designs – 17 Nos.,. Assistant Engineer(H), Planning and Investigation-37 Nos., Assistant Engineer (H), Designs – 38 Nos.
The planning and Investigation is being done by eight Investigation Divisions situated at Chennai, Villupuram, Trichy, Salem, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore and Tirupur.
The Investigation wing carryout field Investigation and sub soil exploration and furnish field data to the Designs wing for the formulation of bridge proposals. They also plan and finalize the alignment proposals.
On receipt of details of field Investigation, the Designs Wing prepares the structural design, drawings and quantity estimates in accordance with the IRC codes and other relevant standards specified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India.
The range of services includes design of river bridges and grade separators especially Road Over Bridges and Road Under Bridges for eliminating Railway level crossings. This wing also does the role of solution provider for complicated cases of bridge failures / rehabilitation. It renders Design services for different projects under CRIDP, Central Road fund and external aided projects like NABARD, HUDCO and World Bank.
During the year 2010-2011, Preparation of designs and drawings for 23 ROBs, 7 RUBs, 36 River Bridges and 7 Grade separators, totaling 73 Nos. costing Rs. 1286.74 Crores were taken-up by Designs wing and cleared.
Latest equipments and software were acquired from the Part II Scheme for the year 2010-2011, for Rs. 191 Lakhs, allocated from the state fund.
