This Wing of the
Highways Department of Government of Tamil Nadu caters to the needs in
respect of Investigation and Designs of various bridge Projects taken
up by the Government of Tamil Nadu every year for implementation.
This Wing functions under one exclusive Chief Engineer and Joint Chief
Engineer. The organisational structure of this Wing comprises of two
sub Wings, namely Designs Wing which takes care of designing and
estimating of bridge Projects and Investigation Wing which takes care
of the Investigation part of the Projects.
The Designs Wing functions with four Designs Divisions at Chennai and
the Investigation Wing with Seven Investigation Divisions stationed at
different locations spread over the entire State.
The Investigation wing carryout field Investigation and sub soil
exploration and furnish field data to the Designs wing for the
formulation of bridge proposals.
The Designs Wing prepares the structural design, drawings and quantity
estimates in accordance with the IRC codes and other relevant
standards specified by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways,
Government of India.
The range of services includes design of river bridges and grade
separators especially Road over Bridges and Road under Bridges. With
the accumulated expertise, this wing also does the role of solution
provider for complicated cases of bridge failures / rehabilitation. It
renders Design services for different projects under PART II SCHEME
with the state fund, Central Road fund and external aided projects
like NABARD, HUDCO, World Bank etc.,
It also provides for the services of scrutiny of Detailed Project
Reports and alternative designs presented by Private Consultants.
