|
A separate Mechanical wing is functioning in Highways
Department to procure, maintain, monitor and repair the modern road
construction machineries like Central Hot Mix Plants, Paver
Finisher, Bulldozers, Generator sets, Stone Crushers. Road Rollers,
Lorries, Tractors etc. |
|
|
The Mechanical wing is headed by the Chief Engineer
who is assisted by a team of Three Divisional Engineers (viz)
Divisional Engineer (H), T&M Chennai. Divisional Engineer (H),
S&P Chennai and Divisional Engineer (H) T&M Pudukottai with
Assistant Divisional Engineers and Assistant Engineers. This team of
Engineers periodically inspect all the available plants of all the
wings of Highways Department (including NH) and give necessary
technical guidance for proper upkeep, repair and replacement or
disposal wherever required. |

The Divisional Engineer (H), S&P division, Chennai
under the control of Chief Engineer (H), Mechanical, is the only
demanding officer for the whole department, procures all tools and
plants and machinery equipments including scientific instruments. |

| SPECIAL ASSIGNMENTS -
RADIAL ROADS |
|
The Government / CMDA have accorded administrative sanction
for Rs. 212.54 crores for carrying out the civil works of
'Improvements to Radial Roads in and around Chennai city' to a length
of 251.60 Km. With 70% loan assistance from HUDCO so far 245.19 Km
has been completed and the remaining works will be completed soon on
finalisation of land acquisition. |

IT industry such as wipro, TCS, Infosys,
Polaris, Pentafour etc have located their offices along the Old
Mahabalipuram Road which is part of Radial Road Scheme. The road has
been widened to four lane divided carriageway configuration; SIPCOT
has developed an IT park at Siruseri to international standards
along this road. Thus development of OMR under radial roads scheme
has played a key role in development of IT industry in Tamil Nadu.
The road has been renamed as IT corridor.

A proposal to widen this road to six lane
cement concrete pavement from Madhya Kailash Temple to Lattice
Bridge Junction has been prepared at an estimated cost of Rs. 19.50
crores and is awaiting sanction.
