| 1. HISTORY |
NABARD wing has been implementing NABARD Aided Projects of Roads and Bridges on " Major District Roads" and " Other District Roads" in the state from 1997 - 98 since the inception of this wing. Subsequently during the year 2000 NABARD has revised its policy to restrict the loan Assistance to Road and Bridge projects on other districts roads and Panchayat union roads only. Highways Projects for improvements such as widening and strengthening of Roads and Construction / Reconstruction of bridges on other district roads are being posed to NABARD to the extent of Loan earmarked every year. These projects are generally phased for a period of two to three years. |
| 2. OBJECTIVES |
NABARD Projects are aimed to provide and improve connectivity for villages to the Marketing centers, Hospitals, Educational Institutions, Major Highways and Rail Heads thereby uplifting the economic and social welfare of the rural poor. The Project also serve to create new economic opportunities and activities, generate additional employment and income, facilitate and improve delivery of other rural services and enhance democratic processes and skills among rural poor. |
| 3. ACHIEVEMENTS |
Improvements to 3893.83 Km. of other District Roads and 256.10 Km. of Major District Roads and construction / Reconstruction of 262 bridges were takenup under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund II - VI upto 31-3-2000 at a cost of Rs. 475.674 crores. Of this 4143.83 Km. of roads and 165 bridges have been completed upto 31-5-2000. The balance works are in progress. The status report of this wing is viewed here. |
| 4. NEW SANCTIONS |
| 4.1 RIDF-VII, Project 34: |
RIDF-VII, Project - 34 for the Construction of 94 Bridges, in the Cauvery Delta Districts (Trichy, Tanjore, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore ) and 28 bridges in the three Districts - Theni, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari with 40 approach roads for 196.6 Km. on Other District Roads at a cost of Rs.79.4855 crores have been sanctioned vide G.O.Ms.No.64/Highways (HW-1) Department / dated 27-03-2002. The works of this project are under different stages of Design, Estimate and Tender stage. |
| 4.2 RIDF-VIII: |
A road project for improvements to 945.22 Kms of 162 Other District Roads at a cost of Rs. 101.17 crores has since been sanctioned by NABARD during the project sanctioning committee held at Mumbai, NABARD Head Office on 7.6.2002. Action is being taken to obtain the Administrative sanction of the Government. |
| 5. FUTURE ACTIONS |
A bridge project for construction of about 148
bridges on Government Other District Roads at a cost of about Rs. 81.00
crores covering 25 districts of Tamil Nadu is under formulation. The
proposals will be forwarded to the Government soon. |
